Amy Carmichael: Rescuer of Precious Gems
What is your overall impression of the
Amy Carmichael: Rescuer of Precious Gems by Janet BengeMy rating: 5 of 5 stars
My overall impression is that this book is wonderful. Amy Carmichael is a stubborn and opiniated women. Her stubbornness causes her to go to India to serve the Lord and be a missionary. Originally, Amy worked with the shawlies, Irish women who had come to England to escape poverty but they only found more of it, but then she gets really sick. When she eventually gets better, she decides to be a missionary to China, but the doctor says she was medically unfit and his word was final. Then, because of her stubbornness, she feels called to Japan and goes there. In Japan, she works as a missionary, but she soon gets Japanese Head (an illness in Japan) and the only cure is to leave Japan. Finally, some time later, she goes to India and she works there with the Indian people for the rest of her life. Most people probably would already give up if they got rejected, but Amy did not. That is one way I like this book.

What is the book about?
This book is all about a person named Amy Carmichael. Amy grows up
in a Christian upbringing. She also has some spunk because at the
beginning of the book, she and the rest of the girls in her dormitory want
to watch the skylight. Unfortunately, dormitory girls were not aloud to
stay up past 9 P.M. Amy gets a idea. Everybody tied a string to their big
toe and Amy would pull the strings every once in a while, so the girls
would not wake up. Then when the bells chimed twelve-o'clock, they then
formed a line and they walked out the door, past the dormitory mistress's
room, and finally up the stairs. They then watched the skylight from the
attic. As you can see, Amy has some spunk. Later, Amy goes to India and
rescues many girls. These girls, come from many different backgrounds. One
girl named Preena, was given to a temple by her mother. Preena, escaped
from her room to Amy because she didn't want to get married. There are a
lot of different girls experiences like Preena's. Her experience is only
one of many experiences that led them to Amy.
Who are the main characters in the book?
There is only one main character in this book because this book is a
biography on Amy Carmichael and this book would not be a good biography if
this book was not all about Amy. Amy spends a lot of her life working as a
missionary in India. At first, Amy wants to live with an Indian, so she can
learn the language faster but she needs someone to support her in her plan.
The person that she hopes will support is named Iyer Walker. Unfortunately
for Amy, Iyer doesn't agree to her plan. He said that she wouldn't survive
there for very long. Later, he invites her to stay with him and his wife, so
she can learn the Tamil language from them. One of Amy's first missionary
things she did was smuggle a girl named Pappamal. Pappamal had told her that
she wanted to become a Christian. Pappamal was sent to live with a Bible
Women, shat Indian Christian women were commonly called. The Bible women
watched her very closely. She soon noticed a man standing outside Pappamal's
window. The next day, the Bible women quizzed Pappamal and a very different
story to the one she had told Amy came out. Pappamal wanted to marry her
boyfriend, but her parents would never allow it because he was from another
cast. Pappamal and her boyfriend came up with a plan that would trick the
missionaries into thinking that she and then her boyfriend wanted to be
Christians and then they could marry each other. Amy was amazed they had all
been easily tricked. Amy also wrote many different books. Such as,
Things as They Are,
The Life of Walker of Tinnevelly and
Ponanammal, Her Story.
What is your favorite part of the book?
My favorite part was when Amy though of a way to watch the skylight even
though they were nt supposed to stay awake that long. I like when Amy
explained her plan and she told everyone to tie the string to their big
toe.
What is your favorite character?
My favorite character in this book is Amy Carmichael because she is the
main person in this book and she is also really brave. Especially when she
was in India and she was rescuing girls.
Who would you recommend/not recommend this book to?
I would recommend this book to people who like biographies and stories
on peoples lives. Even though this book is nonfiction and not
realistic or historical fiction, if you like either of those genres, I
think you would still like this book because they are basically the same
except that nonfiction is real and historical and realistic fiction is
fake. Lastly, I would recommend this book to people searching for
adventure because I think they would enjoy the part where she is
rescuing girls in India. I wouldn't recommend this book to people who
seek fantasy and science fiction.
