The Mystery of Meerkat Hill takes place in Botswana, Africa, where there are wide plains that seem to go farther than the sharpest eye could ever see, until the high and empty sky and the plains meet. There are hills that are on these plains. They are like islands in the sea. Precious and her new friends, Pontsho and Teb live there. Precious lives in a tiny house outside a village with her father, Obed. Pontsho and Teb are siblings. They live with their grandparents, aunt, and mother. Their father died two years ago because of lightning, so they moved here. That’s a little summary of the setting and the main characters.

In the first part, Precious meets Pontsho and Teb. After school, Precious accompanies them to their small, and overcrowded home to meet Pontcho's “pet” meerkat, named Kosi. Pontsho tells Precious about the time when Kosi saved the siblings’ grandfather from a great, big snake. A few days later, Pontsho brings Kosi to school, but it turns out to be a big and embarrassing disaster. The principal was first angry, but then he saw the humor in it. Finally, their cow goes missing, so they have to find her and single her out from all of the cows that she joined. Kosi singles her out and saves the day!

Like children in the U.S.A, Precious goes to school. Unlike Precious, most children don’t walk to school and back because it’s too dangerous. In school, American children do often bring apples as part of their lunch or snack. Another difference is that there are no meerkats here. There are a decent amount of cows, though they mainly live on farms. As you can see, there are many differences and similarities between American children and Precious.

Overall, I believe this book was very interesting. It’s not a scary mystery, like with ghosts, thieves and things being stolen, though they had to follow footprints like real life detectives, just not human ones. It also showed you what life could be like in Africa. I also didn’t know just how important a cow could be for a family’s survival. It also showed you what dangers there could be in Africa, when you’re not even in the forest. The Mystery of Meerkat Hill is definitely a must read book!
